Office Comfort and Wellness: Enjoy it As a Group

Working in an office can be rewarding for career movement. With different options and room to grow, the sky may often be the limit. But comfort and overall wellness can often be a problem as office chairs, desks and sitting in place for eight hours are not the best for the body. Although office workers may enjoy their work, and I know I do, staring into a screen, constantly writing, researching and other work can stretch the mind. Both mind and body need to rest, take breaks and relax to recoup even if it’s done in small splurges.

In my office, we are a family of five. We are the social media department of a marketing company and each work on our own computers in our own stations for our eight hour shifts. We have found many ways to relax our minds and bodies as the hours go by and sharing has by far been the best way.

Body

Yoga Ball vs. Chairs

Even with ergonomic chairs, they are still uncomfortable after a few hours of sitting. Sometimes you may feel like you want to stand or work on a computer while sitting on your knees. Of course those aren’t always an option. So, instead of getting rid of the chair, try a new one.

We have a yoga ball. It sits in the corner happily until one of us gets uncomfortable in these office chairs of ours, and then we switch over. The chair gets moved into the other room, and we sit comfortably, backs straight, legs bent to our height, and just a little bounce to be comfortable. After 30 minutes of that shift in comfort, the body feels repositioned and comfortable. Three times a day on the ball, and the body feels much better.

Stretch It Out

This is one of the oldest and best ways to get the blood flowing to all the muscles, limbs and especially the brain. Letting in more oxygen and blood flow helps wake the body and rejuvenate it too. Stretching can be done easily sitting or by standing and moving around.

We have had many a group stretch in our office. One would stand in our little room of five cubicles and stretch. As soon as another of us has seen him or her stretching, we often quickly join as we remember how long we haven’t moved either. Just two days ago there were three of us—the others on lunch—stretching in the middle of the room together. Every couple of hours just move, stretch and get the body restlessness out. Prevent Obesity in the Easiest Way

With the advent of fast food and sedentary lifestyles, more and more people find themselves building up weight and then eventually suffer from obesity. While there are so many reasons that contribute to obesity, the most common ones are the uncontrolled junk food intake and lack of exercise. However, with self-determination and work, anyone would be able to prevent himself from going on a downward spiral with obesity and suffer its consequences.

Being Physically Active

Being active does not really require you to go to the gym on a daily basis. Even the simplest activities such as opting to climb the stairs instead of taking the elevator or walking to the grocery store instead of driving your car can already bring tremendous advantages to your health and lifestyle. From these activities, build up to perform tougher exercises for increased stamina and strength.

Tracking Your Weight

Weigh yourself at least once every week. If you have been very active, this will allow you to track your weight loss progress. It will also serve as a wakeup call to start getting active if you have been inactive and is eating unhealthily.

Drinking Plenty of Water

Water is very helpful in ridding your body of any impurities that is present in your system. Experts recommend that you should drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water every day to reap its detoxifying benefits. It is also a good way to rejuvenate and hydrate your skin. A glass of warm water that has been squeezed with lemon would be the best way to start your day.

Staying Away from Junk Food

In order to stay healthy, you will have to veer away from taking in junk food. If you really cannot help it, you may indulge in them in very rare occasions. Eating burgers or pizza at most twice in a month should be enough. So that you are not tempted to eat them, do not buy them at all. Also, avoid stocking on them in your house.

Eating in the Right Time and Way

To prevent yourself from getting constantly hungry, take in small and frequent meals daily instead of three big ones. Refrain from eating snacks that are packed with high amounts of calories. When you are eating, eat slowly. By doing so, your stomach is given the time to signal the brain that it is already full.

Having a Good Diet

Make sure that your daily diet is properly balanced with the right combination of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. An adult should have at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. A vegetable serving is equal to a 1 cup of raw or 1 ½ cup of cooked vegetables. A fruit serving is equal to a piece of fresh fruit or ½ cup of canned fruit.

What to Eat and What to Avoid During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time when a woman has to eat for two. This doesn’t just mean finding a way to get all that food into your system—it also means starting to care about what nutrients and elements are found in the food. It’s not just your body anymore, but rather a home for a small, helpless baby. You have to start eating responsibly the moment you find out you’re pregnant.

The Best Foods

Lean meats are often recommended to pregnant mothers by experts because they offer high level of protein with very few fats. This high quality meat is always a better choice than less lean varieties, and will help the mother by providing all sorts of nutrients.

You’ll also want to fill your diet with fruits and veggies galore. The fiber that you get from these foods is only part of the goodness. All the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients from the food goes right into your system as well as the baby’s.

Eggs are one of the best sources of protein, and definitely recommended to the pregnant. Not only are they easy to cook, cheap, and almost always on hand, they are full of many vitamins and minerals essential to developing children. In addition to that, they also provide you with choline, which helps your baby’s brain development.

The No-No’s

One of the most obvious no’s is alcohol. There is absolutely no reason that you should ever drink alcohol during your pregnancy. Alcohol has been clearly shown to cause problems in unborn babies that were made clearer as the child grew older (and the same is true of smoking). This should be obvious to every new mother, and is something that every doctor and expert agrees on.

Less obvious, but still important: try to avoid seafood during your pregnancy. Seafood can contain mercury, which is dangerous for babies in every stage of pregnancy. The problem mainly arises with raw fish, but it’s safer to just avoid seafood altogether rather than risk future problems with the baby.
Finally, stay away from caffeine. Caffeine gets into the baby’s blood, and can mess with their systems.
If you just take a little care to watch what you eat during this important stage in your child’s development, then you can ensure for them a safer and brighter future. You basically want to avoid anything greasy, sugary, or full of empty calories. Choose what you consider healthy, and your baby will thank you.

Winter Weight Solutions

Winter weight gain is an ongoing problem. Statistics show that the average adult American gains between 7-10 pounds during the winter months, both because of decreased physical activity and increased consumption. This trend adds to the overall obesity problem, which in 2011 showed that 33.8% of all Americans are clinically obese, as no state met the Healthy People of 2010 goals lowering obesity prevalence to 15%. Citing these sources, there is no argument that further decreased activity during the winter months can in no way be helpful to the overall goal of good health. The question of “why” comes into play. During the cold weather, people instinctively eat more and “hunker down” in their homes. Snow, ice, and the genuine cold weather naturally keep people indoors. It is much harder for people to push themselves to exercise outside than it is to accept the fact that staying indoors is perfectly natural. Understanding this, what can a person do to stay active while staying at home? Read the rest of this entry »

Comparison between Porcelain Veneers and Composite Veneers

Many people know about both porcelain and composite veneers, but how many people could tell you the differences between them. In this short guide, we will explore this point in more detail.

Time

There are several points surrounding that separate composite and porcelain veneers when it comes to timing. For a start, porcelain veneers can take up to two weeks to create, while composite can be fitted right away. Furthermore, the procedure to fit porcelain veneers is longer. Composite can be fitted in just one trip, while porcelain veneers will usually take about three appointments.

Last but not least is the time that they both last. If you have porcelain veneers, and you keep them well, they can last more than ten years. At the same time, composite veneers will only last five years.

Price

It is no secret that the price for porcelain veneers is expensive. The best-quality porcelain veneers can cost up to $2000 per tooth, while the ‘worst quality’ cost roughly $500 per tooth. On the other hand, the cost of composite veneers is high, but at roughly $400 to $1200 per tooth, they are much less expensive. Read the rest of this entry »

Take Control of Your Cancer Treatment

It’s not uncommon to leave a doctor’s office uncertain about a treatment plan received. It’s unsettling regardless of your health issue, but it’s especially concerning if it involves a course of cancer treatment. A number of options may be worth considering in addition to the standard approaches of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy with x-rays.

Proton therapy

Proton therapy is a form of radiation therapy, but it uses protons to target the cancerous tissue. Protons are more precise, so there’s less damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Not very many people know about this option, including doctors. Because proton therapy requires an expensive cyclotron, only nine such locations are currently active in the U.S. It is especially effective for cancers of the head, neck, spine and eyes. Exercise Is the New Prescription Drug For Seniors

Since the advent of western medicine, prescriptions made by doctors have primarily been for tonics, tablets, powders and potions intended to resolve symptoms of a medical concern. In fact, western medicine has focused primarily upon symptom control as opposed to cures. Today this philosophy is changing as more and more doctors are prescribing exercise and diet changes in order to cure common medical concerns related to aging, weight gain and general well-being.

What Can Exercise Do For Your?

CNN reported that one third of all adult patients are now being prescribed exercise by their doctors to treat their health concerns. Exercise is known to promote better circulation, to lower blood pressure, to improve moods, to enhance brain chemistry and to lower weight. These benefits can help to reverse damage caused by such disorders as diabetes and heart disease.

A Cure for Diabetes?

Exercise can be used as a treatment and a cure for type II diabetes. Reducing your weight by 10 to 15% can be a good first step at stabilizing your blood sugar and reversing the impacts of this disease. When coupled with a healthy diet, exercise even has the ability to cure type II diabetes. Read the rest of this entry »

Risks Factors of Macular Degeneration

Tips For a Better Vision Health

The thought of losing our vision can be frightening. Vision loss most commonly occurs as a person ages. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States and occurs in people 55 and over. There are steps we can take to keep our eyes healthy and reduce the risk of vision loss.

The risk factors for macular degeneration are believed to contribute to a reduction in oxygen and blood supply to the eye leading to damage to the macula. These risk factors include:

  • Aging and free radicals- free radicals causing aging not only the skin, but also other parts of the body, like the eyes.
  • Smoking- While it isn’t understood why, smoking greatly increases a person’s risk for macular degeneration.
  • Atherosclerosis- Hardening of the arteries occurs when cholesterol, fat and other substances build up in the arteries and form plaque. This reduces blood flow and lead to damage of the macula.
  • High blood pressure- this condition also restricts blood and oxygen flow to the macula leading to decreased amount so of needed nutrients and wastes being removed. Read the rest of this entry »

Things to Know About Dental Implants

The loss of a tooth or teeth can have a considerable negative impact on a person’s quality of life. Specifically, tooth loss will damage a person’s eating ability, nutrition intake, appearance, speech, and self-esteem.

With improving technology, dental implants are quickly becoming the treatment of choice for missing teeth. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into the jawbone. The implant is screw-shaped and made of titanium, and will integrate with the bone so that an artificial tooth can be attached to the top of the implant to then appear and function as a natural tooth. In short, a dental implant can be used to replace multiple teeth, provide support for partial dentures, enhance chewing comfort, and increase confidence while smiling. Read the rest of this entry »
