Birth Control to be Covered by Health Insurance Companies
During the month of August, The federal Department of Health and Human Services and the Obama administration decided that health insurance companies must cover birth control, as well as breast pumps for nursing, with no cost. Under the new healthcare law, insurance companies will be forced to cover the costs of birth control and get rid of co-pays and or deductibles that would go along with those costs. These new guidelines will take effect on Aug. 1, 2012.
According to health.usnews.com, “the committee said it hopes to reduce the rate of unintended pregnancies, which make up almost half of all pregnancies in the United States.”
For a long time many women were not able to obtain contraceptive coverage with health insurance. Some of the only ways to gain coverage was to switch to a coverage that had birth control, or try to get a health insurance audit. Because these options are not available to everyone the new law will help those who could not get coverage before.
Margaret Sanger was not the first woman to talk about or encourage birth control, but she was the founder of the American Birth Control League. She was also sent to prison for her efforts because this has been a very controversial issue.
Birth control is a controversial issue because many people of different religious standings believe that pregnancy is not something that should be thought of as a disease. They do not think it is something that needs to be prevented.
Birth control is also controversial because many people believe that birth control can help with more than preventing unwanted births. Birth control can help with many health issues associated with menstrual cycles and more. This particular issue is also controversial because some people do not think that their tax money should go into providing free birth control.
According to many this new law is supposed to be about women’s health and not so much about abstinence. Some health benefits of taking birth control include protection from: Bone thinning, Acne, and bad cramps.
The new birth control coverage was developed by the independent Institute of Medicine and it also comes with new guidelines that require new health insurance plans to cover women’s preventive services that include more than just birth control. These things include: well-woman visits, breastfeeding support, domestic violence screening, and contraception. Women will soon be able to obtain birth control and other preventive means without cost.
