Radiology and MRI Scanners

Radiology is the study of medical imaging.  To put it simply, a radiologist is a doctor who takes pictures of the inside of the human body in order to diagnose and treat illness and disease.  Every medical department makes use of radiology in patient treatment and it is because of this the radiology unit is described as being at the centre of any given hospital.

The radiology department will generally look and feel a little different to other parts of a working hospital.  Coming into this unit is much like entering a spaceship.  There are a lot of high-tech devices and machines, and a large staff presence.  There are also normally only one or two patients in the department at a time, which means the radiology team is able to dedicate its full attention to an individual patient.  This makes for a calm and quiet working atmosphere.

In order to make medical images a radiologist has a number of different options available such as X-rays, CT Scans, ultra-sounds and MRI scans.  Each of these has its different uses and benefits, and so both the individual needs of the patient, as well as the symptoms they present with, will determine what kind of a scan the radiologist will use. How to grow long hair – Trimming

The reason why I am writing this is because I get so many questions about trimming and hair cutting from a lot of people. There seems to be a lot of rumors floating around the web saying to trim your hair every other month or to trim your hair every 6 to 8 weeks or don’t ever trim your hair, therefore I find that hair trimming is a very confusing subject.

Since I tried it all I wanted to straighten up a few things with you guys. What I don’t understand is why this whole thing spread around saying that you need to trim your hair every month or every other month to grow your hair out long. It is just not true. And trimming off like they say, around half an inch? Come on! Your hair grows around 6 inches a year. That is half an inch a month, so if you cut off half an inch every month your hair is not going to get any longer, but it will stay very healthy. So, if you want to maintain your length, then trimming hair every month is a great thing to do, because you will keep your ends is top shape, perfectly healthy. Read the rest of this entry »

Do You Need a Personal Trainer?

Personal training has enjoyed a boom period in the past ten years, increased disposable income and sanctioned training courses and qualifications meant that people could now afford as well as have confidence in this new breed of personal trainer.

Build Diabetes Awareness this November

There were almost two million new diabetics in the United States in 2010, which brings the total number of Americans with diabetes to 25.5 million out of a population of 312 million people.

Why’s diabetes so bad?

People with type 1 diabetes and some people with type 2 diabetes have to inject themselves with insulin every single day. That means sticking a needle in themselves once a day for the rest of their lives. But that’s not the worst part: Diabetics can have to get their limbs and extremities amputated due to poor blood circulation. Nerve damage and kidney failure can affect late-stag diabetics. Type 1 diabetics who don’t take their shots can die very quickly since their bodies don’t produce any insulin.

What can I do to help? Read the rest of this entry »

How To Manage Midlife Transition

No matter how well adjusted we think we are, it seems to sneak up on us all – that day when we look in the mirror and suddenly notice we are not young anymore. It may be our physical appearance that suddenly belies the youth we had be attributing to ourselves, or something more subtle behind the eyes, borne of experience.

Whatever the cause or contributing factor, the realisation that we are no longer in the first flourished of youth can have a strange effect on us, influencing our thoughts, feelings and behaviours – when this happens we are entering the midlife transition.

What is Midlife Transition?

Midlife transition is a natural period of adjustment – it is a time when our outlook and ethos can struggle to reconcile with our age and experience and can cause a number of conflicts within us. In the past the midlife transition was often referred to in terms of “crisis” because for a long time midlife itself was not clearly defined as a period of our lives.

But in an age where life expectancies are ever increasing and children are growing up fast, it is only natural that midlife become accepted as part and parcel of the experience of existence, and so a process of adjustment in order to assimilate this new tag or identity is also in order- hence the midlife transition.

The midlife transition is essentially a time for reappraisal and reassessment, as we grow conscious of entering into the next phase of our lives it seems sensible that we should take time to take stock and look at the paths taken and those ahead in order to ensure that we get the most out of our life experience. Who Should Consider Liposuction

Lipoplasty, more commonly known as liposuction, is a surgical procedure that removes fat deposits via a stainless steel tube and vacuum system. This procedure can be performed on various areas of the body, typically abdomen, hips, and thighs. This helps to reshape the body and give it a more contoured look. While this might sound like the perfect solution for those who cannot get rid of stubborn fat deposits, and for some it is, this procedure is not for everyone. While there are many benefits of liposuction, there is also possible risk.

First, it is a good idea to ask your doctor if you are a good candidate for liposuction, not everyone is. Those who are good candidates are those who have fat pockets in the abdomen, arms, thighs, or other areas. Often these fat pockets are extremely resistant to diet and exercise. Those seeking this procedure should be in relatively good shape. The less excess weight on the body, the better the results from this procedure. Good candidates are in good health. This procedure is beneficial for those who have suffered medical conditions such as lipomas, which are fatty tumors, or those who have had multiple children, and want to get rid of the “muffin top”. A better appearance can lead to improved self-confidence, and removal of excess fat also improves health.

Liposuction may not be an option for those who suffer from medical ailments such as heart disease, lung problems, diabetes, or other health issues that might be a risk factor during surgery. In addition, those who may not be good candidates are those who have unrealistic expectations. Liposuction is not for the obese patient, as it is not a treatment for this disease. Those who are extremely overweight need to consider losing the weight before contemplating this procedure, to ensure optimal results. Furthermore, diet and exercise should always be included in the healthy person’s daily activities. Liposuction is only successful for those who have a good attitude and strive to maintain the results. Read the rest of this entry »

Why is Laser Hair Removal at Home a Good Idea?

Now that FDA approved home laser hair removal systems are easily available, you may be wondering what the benefits are to performing what was previously a fairly expensive salon treatment on yourself at home. You may also want to know if it’s right for you.  Is it easy?  Is it safe?  Does it hurt?  Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why laser hair removal at home is becoming so popular, and answer some of the questions you may have about its suitability for you.

Cost Effective

While the laser hair removal treatment devices are a lot cheaper than they used to be, it is still a reasonable amount to spend on a beauty device.  However, if you think about the amount you would need to spend on regular salon visits to get the same result (especially if your hair is lighter, requiring more treatments) then it is a huge saving.  It is also cheaper (and easier) than a lifetime of using razors, depilatory creams, wax kits, or any other means of keeping yourself hair free.

Fits Around Your Life

Home laser hair removal fits around your life.  While salon hair removal treatment can be time consuming, and you have to schedule appointments to fit with the salon’s opening times and free slots, if you own a device to carry out laser hair removal you can choose when you have your treatments.  Late at night is fine, as is treating different areas in different sessions if you are pushed for time.  You just don’t get that sort of convenience from your salon. Diabetes Myths De-bunked

Diabetes is a complicated disease that plagues roughly 285 million people in the world. It’s very likely that you know someone who suffers from diabetes and have probably struck up a conversation with that person about their disease. With so many facts and reputable sources on the internet, one must wonder how rumors start. After searching the web and visiting several different diabetes blogs and forums, we saw some questions that were asked as comments that left us dumbfounded. Here are the top 3 diabetes myths we heard along with the facts that provide the truth:

  1. If you eat too much sugar, you will develop diabetes- There is a slither of truth behind this statement. The first thing to clarify is that those with type 1 diabetes have the disease due to genetic factors, so diet does not lead to the development of type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is caused by lifestyle factors, namely poor diet and lack of exercise. While a diet that is high in sugar and fatty foods will contribute to developing type 2 diabetes, a high sugar diet doesn’t directly cause diabetes.
  2. People with diabetes are more likely to get sick- I can’t begin to tell you how many times I heard people say that those with diabetes are more likely to catch the common cold than those without diabetes. This is simply not true; people with diabetes are no more likely to catch a cold than those without diabetes. With that being said, it is important for people with diabetes to take extra precautions to avoid getting sick, such as getting a flu shot. This is because it can be more difficult to manage the disease while ill. There is also a greater chance for complications to arise with regards to medicine.
  3. You can catch diabetes from someone- No, No, No; diabetes is not contagious! If you kiss someone who has diabetes, you will not get the disease from them. Unlike a cold or the flu, is someone who has diabetes accidentally sneezes near you, you aren’t going to get the disease. People develop diabetes from genetic and lifestyle factors, not from one another. Haven’t you seen a person with diabetes kiss his significant other? Read the rest of this entry »
