Top 5 tips to keep your vision perfect
If you are reading this blog post with perfect vision then it can be all too easy to become complacent about looking after the health of your eyes. Perfect vision should not be taken for granted, rather it should be appreciated as the extraordinary gift that it is. Millions of people in the U.S are registered either blind of partially sighed. Some of these people were born with impaired vision but the vast majority have developed the impairment as a result of an accident or eye disease. Our vision is a gift and without it our lives would be very much smaller and less enjoyable. Below is a list of my top tips to ensure your vision remains perfect for as long as possible:
- Wear eye protection: It is so easy to be casual when it comes to wearing eye protection, but DIY injuries are one of the most common reasons people lose their vision. If you are involved in any sort of activity that has the possibility of flying particles such as drilling, grinding or sawing, then you should always wear eye protection.
- Have an eye test every 2 years: It is recommended by the health authorities to have an eye test at least every 2 years and this is for good reasons. Eye diseases that are picked up early enough are far easier to treat, meaning they are less likely to cause you any visual impairment. The eyes are extremely fragile and sensitive and once your vision is impaired it can be very difficult to regain this vision again. This is the reason why prevention is always better than cure when it comes to your vision.
- Quit smoking / reduce alcohol consumption: Certain eye diseases such as macular degeneration, cataracts and Glaucoma consider smoking and excessive drinking as risk factors. People who smoke and drink excessively are more likely to get such eye diseases.
- Control blood sugar levels: If you are diabetic it is absolutely paramount that you ensure your blood sugar levels are as stable as possible. Diabetic retinopathy, which is a disease of the blood vessels of the retina, is the biggest cause of blindness in the working age group. The people that tend to be affected are those that have poor blood sugar control.
- Healthy diet: The 2 most important anti-oxidants for the health of our eyes are Zeaxanthin and Lutein and there is evidence to suggest that a diet rich in these nutrients can reduce the risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. Both these anti-oxidants are found in just about all green leafy vegetables including cabbage, spinach, kale and Broccoli. If you are unable to eat them regularly in your diet they can be taken as supplements which are available at most health food shops.
Sticking to these 5 simple pieces of advice will increase the likelihood that your eyes will remain healthy for life. There are never any guarantees as to the health of any part of your body but this will at least mean you have done everything possible that you can do.

6 Healthcare Tips for Children
The obesity rate of both children and adults in North America has increased tremendously over the past ten years. Processed foods, lack of exercise and not taking advantage of preventative ways to keep sickness at bay is responsible for many illnesses. Improving children’s health starts with the habits of their caregivers. Parent’s daily actions often determine if a child will be healthy or obese. Here are six healthcare tips for children.
Insurance
Many people are choosing health insurance plans that offer less coverage, but are more affordable. Scheduling an annual physical is a great way to ensure that a family doctor has a chance to thoroughly evaluate each child’s health. Take time to contact the insurance company and confirm all of the benefits that the policy has to offer. Some companies will even offer cheap car insurance discounts for parents who use a car seat. Whether it’s health insurance or car insurance, one must make sure they are protecting their children and saving money!
If the co payment for a single visit for a minor ailment is $50, have some money set aside so that the co payment is painless on the current household budget. Ensure that current copies of insurance cards are easily accessible. This will help prevent delays in processing prescriptions given in the doctors office.
Exercise
Children need to exercise in order to maintain a healthy body weight. Many school districts around the country have cut the funding for all or part of the physical education programs. Recess time after lunches has been cut to save time in a number of schools.
Parents that actively find a few active activities each week are teaching their children by example. Scheduling time to exercise as a family is important. This can be done anytime at least one parent or caretaker is available. Dedicating some time daily for exercise with the children shows them that their health is important.
Walking for fifteen to twenty minutes after dinner, playing catch, playing volleyball, or jogging are no cost ways to exercise. Children who see parents making fitness a priority have a better chance of being healthier adults. Exercises release endorphins that promote a feeling of well being.
This makes exercise especially important if there are stressful personal or work related situations that could affect the quality of interaction with the children. Active exercise is a perfect way to connect with the children, and keep an open dialogue. Read the rest of this entry »
How to Get the Most From Your Gym Membership
With an intensified focus on health and fitness becoming apparent across the country, there are an increased number of people visiting gyms. Gym memberships often come with a range of features and benefits, but how can you make the most of them? Here are a few suggestions:
Stay Motivated
The hardest thing with any fitness regime is to retain your motivation. The most important thing to remember is that once you miss a session it will become increasingly easy to miss others. It is therefore essential that you set yourself a realistic fitness schedule. Discuss this with gym advisors and trainers in order to determine how often you need to visit. Then balance this with your other commitments.
To stay motivated outside the gym, consider printing your schedule and fixing it to your fridge. Write all your gym appointments into your daily diary so that you never forget an appointment. If you are aiming to lose a certain amount of weight, or tone a particular area, then consider placing pictures of your desired results around your home for inspiration.
Be Prolific
Gym memberships are designed to allow you to get the best value for money when visiting the gym. The easiest way to do this is to be prolific. Visit the gym as often as you can to make the most of your membership, but do so within reason. Always speak to a personal trainer or professional to get advice and remember to pace yourself during exercise to avoid sustaining injuries.
Be Varied
A great feature of gym membership is that they offer a range of different classes and activities free of charge. These are often overlooked by most members, who stick with what they are familiar with. Be varied and make the most of your membership. Make an aim to try a new activity or class every couple of weeks. This can be a great way for you to discover new interests and to tone different areas of your body. If you don’t enjoy a class then you can always change to something else. Read the rest of this entry »
Healthy Foods That Can Improve Your Eyesight
Enlightenment brings vision to those who decide to make a few changes with their eating habits. Parents and grandparents of yesterday provided families with meals that were closer to what nutritionists would call enhanced. In today’s world of fast foods and no time for real cooking, people are becoming weaker including their eyes.
Foods are the first step to remaining healthy. The eyes in particular have some very intricate nutritional needs for all of the various functions of the eye. Nutrition is the first step to health and yet it may not be the last step. In a world of mass production all people need to be aware that the foods they purchase are not always as healthy as they would like. The time involved between harvest and the produce section of the stores can be long. As time progresses the nutritional quality of the food deteriorates.
It is good to buy locally from a smaller farm that provides fresh fruits and vegetables for purchase on a daily basis. Canning and blanching, then freezing are two different ways to preserve fruit and vegetable freshness and increase the nutritional quality of life. Some brands of frozen vegetables freeze immediately upon harvesting. It is good to know the companies that do this. Storing food in cans began during World War II in order to preserve food for the ‘long haul’ emergency times and has not necessarily produced the nutritional quality that society now wants and demands. The invasion of farms with pesticides is another consideration for health, longevity and the quality of life.
A variety of foods containing certain vitamins and minerals are important for eye health. Eating various fruits and vegetables ‘raw’ and uncooked is vital for the preservation of nutrients. Read the rest of this entry »

Smoking During Pregnancy – What You Should Know
Most babies are exposed to cigarette smoke from the moment of conception. Chemicals from cigarette smoke have been found in the placenta, amniotic fluid and fetal bloodstream of both actively and passively smoking mothers.
Surveys suggest that around 30 per cent of mothers smoke at some stage during pregnancy, with 25 per cent smoking throughout. Only 5 per cent of pregnant women manage to give up. Even if you don’t smoke yourself, the risk to your baby is increased if someone else in your household does. Two-thirds of nonsmoking adults – including pregnant women – are exposed to the equivalent of at least one hour of passive smoking per week.
Stopping smoking at any stage of pregnancy is better than continuing to smoke all the way through. Up to 4,000 different chemicals are present in tobacco smoke, of which many are highly toxic. Women who smoke during pregnancy have a 30 per cent higher risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal and sudden infant death than babies born to non-smoking mothers. It is estimated that eliminating smoking in pregnancy could prevent 5 per cent of stillbirths and deaths associated with delivery.

You could share the visit with a friend and use the opportunity to catch up and generally have a good gossip. There are many different types of spa throughout the UK, but choosing which to visit might prove a bit of a challenge. Try a spa booking website, such as Belaqua, where you can locate a spa which meets your needs. You can even call a spa expert to get some advice. Read the rest of this entry »
