Causes Of Acid Reflux – What You Can Do

Acid reflux, as far as most diseases and disorders go, is fairly minor. With some minor lifestyle changes it is almost always easy to control. Some people are even able to forget that they have this disorder. An attack can be scary when you do go through one, though. It can help to understand the causes of acid reflux. Avoiding an attack is easier to do if you know what can cause it, after all. Once in a while the cause is purely medical but for the most part, it is easy to keep this disorder in check. Here are some of the major causes of heartburn and what you can do about them.
In some cases, an attack is triggered by lack of sleep. Adult humans need to get eight hours of sleep every night. Your body needs this time to rest, relax and repair itself from the day to day life you lead. When you don’t get enough sleep at night your body can react badly. In some cases, your mental function becomes impaired. Lack of sleep can also result in a lack of coordination. Without enough sleep, your stomach may produce more acid which increases your chances of suffering from an acid reflux attack. The frequency of your attacks should noticeably decrease when you get plenty of rest.

How often do you exercise? While doing certain exercises too strenuously can trigger an attack, not exercising is another acid reflux trigger. Not exercising causes your body to become sluggish. When your body doesn’t function to its full capability it can’t process the acid in your stomach properly which then leads to an acid reflux attack. Try to get at least a little bit of exercise every day. The exercise does not need to be high impact-a brisk walk is often enough.

Another culprit of acid reflux is caffeine. While caffeine is a great pick me up, it tends to wreak havoc on your system. A bout of heartburn is often a sign that you need to cut back on your caffeine consumption (or cut it out altogether). Caffeine withdrawals are not fun but these are only temporary and it would be better to live without the acid reflux issues. Do your body a favor and switch to decaf.

Most acid reflux causes can be avoided. Mostly the causes of acid reflux are controllable through lifestyle choices but there are some medical reasons too. Figuring out what in your life may be causing your acid reflux attack and making changes is the best way to prevent them. You can work with your primary care physician to figure these things out. They may also have additional tips for avoiding future attacks. Even those prone to acid reflux can lead a perfectly normal life.
