Common Misdiagnosis of Migraines

They impose this false diagnosis on the doctor and as result a misdiagnosis is formed. Other patients withhold important information especially on the symptoms. This happens because they feel embarrassed to mention symptoms like diarrhea or those related to their private organs. Most people assume that it’s the doctor’s job to ask about the symptoms and if a symptom is not asked then to them it’s probably not important. These beliefs can lead to a misdiagnosis. When you visit doctors, tests are usually ordered and failure to do so may also leads to misdiagnosis. Patients fail to have the tests done because they feel embarrassed to let’s say give their stool or urine, in other cases they don’t have the money to pay.

Patients are not the only people to be blamed; the doctors are the primary persons. Since there are so many diseases it is possible for the doctors also, to not be familiar with yours. A general doctor may not have the knowledge on special cases and this can cause a misdiagnosis. Other doctors omit important tests because they assume the patient does not have the money to pay them.

When it comes to migraine, top neurologists agree that this condition is grossly misdiagnosed. Studies show that 60% of migraine sufferers have had some form of misdiagnosis or bad treatment. Although doctors keep getting educated on many diseases, this does not involve migraines. When a migraine misdiagnosis is done, this means the patient will not receive the right treatment. When a migraine is not treated, this can lead to fatal conditions like a stroke, dental infections, coma, aneurysms and even death. Taking the wrong medications for a condition you do not have can also be dangerous, especially to pregnant women.

Since misdiagnosis of migraines happens all the time, emergency rooms sometimes neglect these patients. They assume that they are seeking some form of attention and as a result turn them away.  Some conditions that are usually misdiagnosed for a migraine includes tension headache, common headache, brain tumor, cluster headache, sinusitis, multi infarct dementia, pseudo tumor cerebri, subarachnoid hemorrhage and transient ischemic attack. The three forms of migraines include exertion related, food and alcohol related and medication related.  Since migraines can be a great hindrance to your work, these sick people are always considered weak and unproductive. Therefore when you feel like your headaches are occurring regularly and painkillers are not offering any relief, ask your doctor whether it could be a migraine. Let him run some migraine tests and give you medications that do not have strong side effects. Remember migraines can damage your work and even relationship with people so it’s important to get the right diagnosis.
