Peptic Ulcer – Know The Facts

Peptic ulcers can be developed either at the level of the duodenum or at the level of the stomach. Duodenal peptic ulcers are generally less serious, while stomach peptic ulcers can lead to serious complications. In the absence of an appropriate medical treatment, stomach peptic ulcer can lead to perforated ulcer or bleeding ulcer, disorders that require immediate medical intervention.

Stress creates too much acid in the body. Stress and a very poor diet will undoubtedly lead to stomach or digestive problems and many times this will lead to headaches, bilious or migraine headaches. And what do most people take for headaches? Answer: drugs in the form of aspirin. Aspirin converts into ascetic acid and literally eats up your red blood corpuscles (just like white vinegar does). Aspirin is so caustic on the internal lining in the stomach and digestive tract that it literally burns a hole in the lining of the digestive tract causing gastric ulcers which eventually leads to internal bleeding which many times is manifested in blood in the stools.

Peptic ulcer is very common, millions of Americans being diagnosed with different forms of the disorder each year. The advance of modern medicine has allowed scientists to find out more valuable information about these disorders, enabling them to develop new medical treatments. Although in the past peptic ulcer was known to affect mostly male persons, more and more women suffer from forms of peptic ulcer nowadays. Statistics indicate that the predominance of smoking among women has determined an increase of peptic ulcer incidence with the female gender.

An ulcer develops when the balance between the acidic digestive juices and the protective lining of the stomach and intestines (mucous membrane)is disturbed. This leads to a corrosion of the lining, permitting ulcers to form. Experts now understand that a common cause of developing peptic ulcers is a bacterium (a germ) called Helicobacter pylori.

The bacteria starts to ‘eat’ the protective membrane that protects the stomach lining or the duodenum and lets the damaging acids pass through, causing more trouble and eventually leading to the appearance of peptic ulcer. Certain spicy foods and a stressful lifestyle can amplify the ulcer’s effects, but they don’t cause it. Anyway, it’s more likely that a person who has been eating junk-food all his/her life has a more advanced and severe ulcer than someone who has been eating healthy food.

The major cause of peptic ulcer is infection with a type of bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. Although there are various other factors that contribute to the development of peptic ulcer, the disorder generally occurs as a consequence of infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria. These bacteria weaken the internal organs’ protective walls, allowing gastric acids and pepsin to cause serious damage to soft tissues and organs.
