Some Facts About Cancer For Senior Citizens

From the moment of birth onward, people are engaged in the process of aging, undergoing a gradual process of maturation and then decline. This process is not fully understood, but research has identified several factors that contribute to the maturing and deterioration of the human body. Still, this knowledge, coupled with a “healthy” lifestyle, cannot deter the normal processes involved in life and death.

Of all the organ systems that are subject to change as a person ages, the musculoskeletal and cognitive systems are the most likely to be negatively affected. This involves the weakening of muscles, bones, joints, and cartilage. As we age, our muscles lose mass and tone, and the connective tissue and joints become stiffer and unable to tolerate as much stress, causing arthritis and spinal problems. Regular exercise can significantly decrease the loss of strength, but some loss is natural and cannot be prevented. Osteoporosis, which is caused by a lack of mineral content in the bones, can also become a problem. It causes bones to become less dense and more fragile than usual, and it makes people more susceptible to fractures.

Cognitive abilities can also be subject to significant deterioration, which can lead to dementia. Short-term memory loss is a common effect of aging. Dementia—a more serious condition—is the loss of cognitive or intellectual function. Not every older adult will suffer from dementia, but its symptoms are present in many individuals, including those with Alzheimer’s disease. Studies have shown that people can retain normal cognitive abilities even into their 90s, but some level of dementia is very common.

Two biological systems that show little change as people age are the digestive and reproductive systems. The problems that can arise from these systems are generally not detrimental, and some older adults may not even notice these changes. Older adults can still function sexually despite changes such as menopause in women and erectile dysfunction in some men. There is some reduction in sexual function as people age, but sexual desires and performance can remain normal into old age, and the declines that do occur are often treatable.

As we age and become more vulnerable to injury due to physiological changes, we should become aware of the environmental adjustments necessary to alleviate the impact of these changes. Arthritis, general weakness, osteoporosis, weight loss, and other physical changes make many older adults prone to falling or experiencing similar accidents. In order to make a home comfortable and safe for people with these problems, an assessment should be done to identify possible risk factors. Some common interventions to avoid falls are as follows:
* secure carpet edges
* reduce clutter
* check for adequate lighting
* install handrails on staircases
* avoid floor wax
* install grab bars in the bathroom
* use rubber mats in the tub or shower
* install a raised toilet seat
* repair cracked sidewalks

While this list is not entirely comprehensive, it provides a basis for thinking about the kinds of improvements that can be done to avoid hazardous situations. The human body goes through many changes as we age, and certain systems of the body are more prone to negative changes than others.
