Using Goal Setting to Achieve Your Dreams

Goal setting is a great tactic and can really give you edge when trying to achieve anything in life not just your fitness goals. Professional sports people use it regularly and many teams actually have a sports psychologist on board full time who is valued as much as a team doctor. What the professionals are doing today usually trickles down to the rest of us tomorrow, but I’m going to explain the steps here so you can get the edge to today.

Research continually shows that performance is linked to goals that are set. Your goals are what you set out to achieve in a time frame that you also set. Research also shows that the clearer the goals the more of them are met.

Setting your self clear and defined weight loss goals will not guarantee you success but it will give you a significantly better chance of achieving what you want then people who have either no goals or very vague ones.

Here is a step by step guide of how you can write out your own well formed goals. It should take no longer than 3 hours to do and once you have finished leave it for a few days and then revisit them and see if that is really what you want, only then will you know for sure. Regularly review you goals to keep you focussed and on track to achieving them, this will take you no longer than ten minutes at a time.

  1. Write down exactly and precisely what your ideal world would be like three years from today.

  2. Make sure your description is well balanced and that you have covered all areas of your life, don’t neglect anything.

  3. Make sure your description is very specific, if you want a certain type of shoes, what are their brand? Exactly what colour are they? Where will you buy them? How will they make you feel? Etc.

  4. Make sure your description is challenging but not impossible.

  5. Make sure it is what you really want.

  6. Repeat steps 1-5 for one year goals, identifying any milestone to reach along the way.

  7. Repeat steps 1-5 for 6 months, 3 months and 1 week goals.

Good luck and I hope that you achieve all that you desire!
