Herpes Simplex Virus And Its Infections- Detroit

Herpes simplex virus, the virus that causes genital herpes, belongs to the same family of viruses that cause cold sores, chickenpox, shingles and other diseases. Genital herpes can be transmitted during vaginal, anal or oral sex even if the infected person has no open sores or any other symptoms of infection. Herpes can be diagnosed only if it is looked for. Tell your physician about your herpes to make sure he or she considers herpes as a possibility for your baby. Herpes I and II sores can also spread between the mouth and genitals of different individuals during oral sex. Sometimes people have the herpes viruses but don’t show any symptoms.

Herpes simplex features as groups of painful blisters or sores are caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV) on people’s skin. It can happen on all parts of the skin but mostly are found around the peri-oral and peri-genital areas, depends on the infected HSV type. Herpes can not always be seen or felt and the herpes pictures that you might find out there on the internet are not realistic and usually considered the worst case scenarios. Many people that have herpes don’t even know that they have it because they don’t get signs or symptoms. Herpes continues to live in the body between outbreaks, and recurrent episodes of symptoms may occur. Relapses can be precipitated by emotional or physical stress, fever, trauma, hormonal changes, sunlight, alcohol and immunological deficiencies.

Herpes zoster lives in nerve tissue. Outbreaks of shingles start with itching, numbness, tingling or severe pain in a belt-like pattern on the chest, back, or around the nose and eyes. Herpes simplex 1 and 2 are frequently benign but can also cause severe disease. In each case, the initial lesion looks the same. Herpes is a very common infectious disease, but there is a surprising lack of information on herpes available about it, and an equal lack of “heart” in dealing with it.

Herpes signs may appear without warning. These “outbreaks” will appear on average from 1-5 times per year when the virus “wakes up”. Herpes is a very common infection. It is caused by two different but closely related viruses. Herpes can also be spread from a mother to her baby when she gives birth.

Herpes infects the nerve cells of the spinal cord (genital herpes) and the nerves at the base of the brain (oral herpes). The virus is contagious. Herpes zoster can cause several problems with the eye and surrounding skin that may have long term effects. Inflammation and scarring of the cornea , along with conjunctivitis (inflammation of the conjunctiva ) and iritis (inflammation of the iris ) are typical problems that require treatment. Herpes of the eye can be transmitted through close contact with an infected person whose virus is active.

Herpes infections also can be transmitted by a person who is infected with HSV but has no noticeable symptoms. Such asymptomatic shedding of the virus may be fairly common, occurring from 5 percent to 20 percent of the time in infected individuals. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) may produce nearly identical lesions, but unlike herpes zoster, HSV tends to recur and is not dermatomal. Viruses can be differentiated by culture. Herpesvirus is a common respiratory pathogen (infectious agent) that causes an upper respiratory disease in most cats.
