What Did Chipra Achieve During 2009?

Almost immediately President Obama took control of the White House, the combined majorities in both chambers were used to enact the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009 (CHIPRA). As has become the norm, the Republican party opposed the law. So, now that we have one year of experience, it’s interesting to revisit the Act to see whether this allegedly socialist measure has worked for good or the evil predicted by the GOP. The purpose was to help the millions of children whose parents had fallen on hard times and could no longer afford private family health plans. In effect, the recession was creating an underclass of children who were potentially uninsured. By making an immediate transfer of funds to individual states, local governments were able to expand their own medical coverage programs to admit more families in need. The current estimate is that about 2.5 million children were allowed into either Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). This was achieved by a simple change.

All but two of the 50 US states have used the additional federal funding to cover a family of four where the parents earn up to $48,000. This is significantly more than the national poverty level and allows more people into the state schemes albeit, in all but nineteen states, the parents must pay a small monthly premium and some out-of-pocket expenses. Despite increasing the family income threshold, the extent of the coverage has actually reduced in fifteen states. The politics of entitlement is always a complicated affair. The CHIPRA process has required some states to dismantle some of their bureaucratic barriers. Fast track or express lane procedures have been put in place to avoid long waiting lists and delays. With streamlined enrollment, children have been added to the programs on the basis of immediate need, with the follow-up work of verifying family status and income being completed later. The President’s wish to make the children the main focus of attention has been respected.

At an administrative level, there is an improved system for the exchange of information between states, and between states and the federal agencies. The intention is to create a full Electronic Health Record for every child so that, no matter where the child presents with symptoms, his or her records can be made available. If this system can be implemented, the expectation is that the quality of pediatric health care will improve and medical costs will be reduced as the flow of information will improve diagnosis without the need to go through detailed tests every time. There is a budget of $33 billion allocated to cover development of an improved health care delivery service for children.

This is a good report card for the first year of additional and targeted funding. Even though some state governments have resisted the federal plan to increase accessibility to Medicaid and CHIP, the number of children newly admitted is encouraging. So, if none of the health insurance quotes you receive when you use this site’s search engine offer you affordable coverage, do not give up. Federal and state funding is available to ensure that your children get the medical treatment they need when it is needed. Of course, this is not going to help if your family earnings are too high. In such cases, you may have to get health insurance quotes for more limited coverage. Otherwise, shop around to find individual doctors or clinics who quote the lowest prices for different treatments. Money can be saved if you take the time to use the internet search engines.

How to Find Affordable Term Life Insurance During Tough Economic Times

Even though the recession is slowly churning over, many of us are still grappling with low salaries or lost jobs, some of us have lost homes, and some of us are struggling to make ends meet. The only ways to stay afloat are by cutting down on spending, and exploring cheaper alternatives on all our purchases.

Term life insurance is however, required.
Unfortunately, in the process of cutting corners, many feel that they can do away completely with life insurance, even with the comparatively cheaper term life insurance. However, if there is one thing that you need to keep during tough economic times, it is a term life insurance policy. Here’s why:

  • Even if you are knee-deep in debt, you should get a policy, because in the event that you declare bankruptcy, any insurance on your life won’t be taken over by the courts.
  • In the event of your death, without a term life insurance policy your family will have to pay off all your creditors, including your mortgage. This will prove to be a huge financial strain for them, especially as the recession has resulted in lesser equity and savings, and if they don’t have the means to pay, it could mean putting them in dire straits.

So life insurance is an absolute necessity during a recession. Luckily, there are ways to get affordable term life insurance.

How to get affordable term life insurance

Finding affordable life insurance that fits into your tight budget is not that difficult when you are armed with the knowledge of how to get the best value for money on your life insurance plan.

  1. Know the importance of accessing a reputed, unbiased multi-carrier agency website
where you can do your preliminary research as well as consult with an agent as a great first step to buying cheap life insurance as you follow these guidelines:
  • A quote service on a reputed website can simplify the process of shopping around. However, use the quote service engine only as a benchmark of what you really need. This is because the so called ‘low life insurance rates’ that the industry often touts may not be available to you, if you can’t meet the underwriting guidelines. When accessing a quote service, remember to look for one that asks the most questions (pertaining not just to your medical health, but also your driving history, profession, hobbies, smoking habits, etc.) because your quote is likely to be truer, and more reflective of what your actual rate may be.
  • Don’t opt for the lowest rated quotes. They may lack some necessary features. Each life insurance product is different and beneath an attractive quote there could be riders and options that you don’t really need, or won’t adequately protect your interests. That is why it is important to use an online multi-carrier agency that offers you the chance to talk to their experts. An expert will be able to give you personal assistance on the right quote to choose. Some things to discuss with the expert are conversion options, the insurance carrier’s financial strength, etc.
  • Remember that a quote is just that, and until the underwriting process is complete, you won’t really know the rate you will qualify for. So be realistic and totally honest when you apply, to avoid disappointments later.
  • Each life insurance company assesses applications differently. e.g., Some companies may look more favorably on a history of cancer in the family, than do others. So when you first request quotes, and then discuss them with an unbiased agent, he should be able to tell you which companies are partial to your particular situation and provide guidance for you to make an informed decision. By finding the right company, the gains could be as much as 20% – 30%.
  1. Never rely completely on employer-funded group term plans, because in tough times, your job could be at risk. If you leave your workplace, you will suddenly find yourself uninsured, and will have to scout around for fresh policies. They may not come cheap especially as you may be older then, and possibly not in as good health.
  2. Don’t underestimate the importance of your medical exam. Take time to prepare for your term life insurance medical exam so that you can increase your chances of obtaining a more affordable term life insurance rate. e.g., you should switch over to a healthy diet at least a week prior to your exam. A good online agency will be able to give you complete information on how to prepare for your medical exam.
  3. If a lump sum payment seems like a lot of money, opt for monthly payments: In tough economic times lump sum annually paid premiums can be quite a strain on your finances. Though premiums are discounted at lump sum rates, if you feel you can manage monthly payments better, then opt for monthly payments until your financial situation improves.

Compared to a few years ago life insurance rates have come down now. However, times are still tough and instead of being the first item to get struck off your financial plan your life insurance should be elevated to #1 priority. It is better to have some life insurance than none at all. In the event of your death, it is the only financial plan that can take care of your debts, as well as provide for your family.
As explained earlier in this article, a good multi-carrier life insurance agency that offers unbiased advice from experts is key to helping you get the best quotes.

Mere Fasting is Best During Periods of Personal Loss

Some people have a problem with either exercise or diet. Others have a problem with both. These people know what they have to do, but simply cannot motivate themselves to do it. For whatever reason the desire to be more trim is just not strong enough in them.

Often times, this is an existential problem. In the most extreme form it is a question of why bother as one is going to die anyway. In other words, the desire for future gain does not out weigh the pay offs from immediate gratification.

One might expect that this conviction is strongest in older persons, who are nearing the end of their lives. Perhaps they are now in their nineties. These people may once have had a desire to be fit, possibly to attract a future lifelong partner. But this person may have recently passed away. The desire to attract another is simply non-existent

A very similar predisposition can be found in people who are much younger. Even those in their thirties can have a lack of desire to be healthier or more vibrant after the loss of a significant other. One might think that they would be anxious to try again with someone other. However, that desire may take some time to re-emerge.

One of the best things to do in instances such as these is to simply wait before starting a complete health routine. Time is on a younger person’s side and will soon return, causing a renewed will to live. That is not to minimize the pain or sense of devastation which often follows from a younger person’s loss of a loved one. But it is to say that time does heal these type of wounds.

During this period, one should never expect too much. Throwing oneself into a full athletic lifestyle, no matter how advisable, may be just too much. That is why one should merely start by cutting back back in the form of a fast.. Cutting back should be relatively easy as the natural grief processes help in this endeavor.

The most important thing to remember is that self-indulgence is never an answer to one’s misery. Sometimes this is a temptation. But one should never give into as it will only make matters worse. Too often it results in withdrawal by way of decreased happiness with others.

Fasting as an alternative eliminates this self-defeating end. Green tea capsules possibly with an appetite suppressant such as hoodia should be considered to make the entire process much easier. One can then start or resume a full workout and diet program after the depression has run its course.

Exercise During Pregnancy– Is it Ok?

Tired of back aches? Worried about becoming unhealthy during pregnancy? Nervous about the delivery? Exercise during pregnancy can actually help in all of these areas. There are many myths circulating that it is unsafe to work out when pregnant, but, unless you have specific complications, this is false.

Of course it is important to be careful about exercise when you are pregnant. Every woman should consult with her doctor to make sure her exercise program is safe and right for her circumstances. Often we take the extremes in working out. Some want to push themselves to the edge of their limits, as they may have done before pregnancy. Others are afraid of doing any kind of exercise at all. Overworking your body is by far worse, but with a moderate plan of exercise you can maintain good health during pregnancy. Using a low impact workout will help you maintain your fitness without jeopardizing your joints or your developing baby.

Some of the benefits of low impact exercise during pregnancy are to you prepare your body for delivery, and to recover more quickly after delivery. In working out, you can enhance your endurance levels and build up the muscles you will be using in delivery. Keeping fit will cause you to gain less overall fat and allow you to shed the extra weight of pregnancy more quickly. The goal of exercising while pregnant is not to lose weight but to sustain your health and fitness.

Other benefits are looking and feeling better! During pregnancy, stress accumulates from the day to day worries and the changes occurring in the body. Exercise is a natural stress reliever. It is a way to drive out your frustrations. Your body releases endorphins when you work out which act as a natural opiate to dull pain and just make you generally feel better. It also stimulates the brain. Physical exercise gives your immune system the boost it needs to be able to fight against colds and other illnesses. Despite the changes in your body, with proper exercise you may even find a better quality of sleep at night.

So what kinds of exercise are good in pregnancy? One of the best is walking. A brisk walk is recommended, though you can take your walk at your own pace according to how your body is feeling. Don’t forget about warm up and cool down periods. It is best to start your walk at a leisurely pace for the first few minutes and then take it up to a more vigorous level, remembering to take the last few minutes to cool down. Also avoid the hottest parts of the day, as overheating and dehydration are potentially dangerous for the fetus. Walking is just one option. You can mold your workout routine out of your interests. Be careful of activities or exercises that have lots of bouncing or require you to lie on your back. Make sure to check your exercises out with your doctor, who can advise you on their safety. Lookout for dizziness or extra pain, as it is an indication that it is time to stop.

Obviously exercise is not the only important element of health during pregnancy. Diet is essential to keeping your body and your baby’s body healthy and strong. Don’t forget to add a prenatal vitamin to your diet and eat foods that are rich in vitamins and carbohydrates. Taking care of your body is the best thing you can do for your baby.

Dealing With Sexually Transmitted Diseases during Pregnancy

One of the risks that people take during sexual intercourse is the possibility of contracting a sexually transmitted disease or STD. The consequences of acquiring one are even greater during pregnancy because the condition can severely affect the health of both the mother and her baby. Moreover, contracting such diseases during pregnancy may result to long-term effects on the health of the baby.

Sexually transmitted diseases are one of the leading complications during pregnancy. The infection affects approximately two million women during their pregnancy. This is because getting pregnant offers no fail-safe protection from acquiring the disease, and a woman who is pregnant is as vulnerable as any other woman active in sexual activities. If sexually transmitted diseases are dangerous enough for a woman who is not pregnant, the risks multiply even more for a pregnant woman.

Why STDs are More Dangerous during Pregnancy

Sexually transmitted diseases that are acquired during pregnancy are potentially life threatening. This is because a pregnant woman’s health is very fragile. She must learn how to protect herself and her baby from infection.

The following are the common consequences when contracting sexually transmitted diseases during pregnancy:

1) Cervical cancer and other infections in the reproductive system

2) Chronic hepatitis

3) Cirrhosis

4) Early onset of labor

5) Uterine infection

Premature rupture of the uterine membranes that surround the baby

Once a pregnant woman learns that she is infected with sexually transmitted diseases, the first thing that she needs to do is to seek medical treatment right away. However, just like in the case of sexually transmitted diseases affecting non-pregnant women, detection of the disease is difficult. Often, it is only detected when it is already in its advanced stages. Detection at an earlier stage is often difficult and is a very critical element towards proper treatment.

What is even more dangerous with sexually transmitted diseases acquired during pregnancy is the possibility of the transmitting the disease or causing an infection to the infant. For example, syphilis is known to cross the placenta and cause fetal infection, which may affect the development of the baby. Aside from syphilis, other sexually transmitted diseases that can be transmitted to the infant are HIV and genital herpes.

Once infection is passed on to the infant, there are many consequences that will result such as cirrhosis, liver disease, meningitis, hepatitis, blindness or deafness, neonatal sepsis, brain damage, pneumonia, conjunctivitis, low birth weight, and stillbirth.

The Best Treatment for Sexually Transmitted Diseases during Pregnancy

Medical experts suggest that the best way to protect one from sexually transmitted diseases is through a monogamous relationship. This is because any medication taken by a pregnant woman has to be considered against the possible risks, especially towards the health of the baby. Fortunately, there are antibiotics that are safe for pregnant women and can cure some sexually transmitted diseases. However, some STDs such as HIV and genital herpes are not curable during pregnancy and any medication against them is only to reduce the symptoms.

Preventing Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

Stretch marks are said to be related to hormonal changes that happens during puberty, pregnancy, and muscle building. Stretch marks are the off-color scarring on the skin that is caused by the tearing of the dermis. This can disappear eventually but not fully. The possibility of developing stretch marks increases among pregnant women. In fact, 75 to 90 percent of women will develop stretch marks during their pregnancy.

For pregnant women, stretch marks will appear on the abdomen, the upper thighs, the buttocks, breasts, and the arms. The enormity and amount of the stretch marks will depend on the pregnant women’s total weight gain, genetic history, and the effort that these women put into preventing the stretch marks. What should pregnant women do to prevent stretch marks?

Preventing Stretch Marks

If there is one thing that many pregnant women don’t want to have as a souvenir of their pregnancy, it would be stretch marks. Genetics play an important role in whether or not a woman is susceptible to developing stretch marks. So if your mother ever got stretch marks when she was pregnant, there is a big possibility that you would get them also. There are many means in which you can prevent stretch marks from developing. Even if you are inclined to having them, you could limit the possibility by just following some simple guidelines. Here’s what you should do:

* Develop a healthy diet. You should control your weight gain to a recommended range of 25 to 35 pounds. This will not only contribute to the general health of your skin but it will also improve the health of the baby. A controlled weight gain will minimize the stretching of the skin and therefore the enormity of the stretch marks will also be minimized.

* Locate the possible areas in which stretch marks will develop or the areas that you want to prevent stretch marks from appearing. Massage these areas using a body brush or a wash cloth to increase the circulation of the blood in that area.

* Hydrate yourself. Drink plenty of water as this helps in improving the health of the skin and the health of the baby too.

* Take vitamins such as Vitamin E. This will ensure the health of your skin.

* Moisturize your skin effectively especially during the first and second trimester. There are many oils and creams that are available for you to use and you can use any of them even without the prescription of your doctor or dermatologist. This will keep your skin elastic and supple as these act as food for your skin. The formula in these creams will enhance the production of collagen, supports the dermis, and still keep the skin intact despite the rigorous stretching.

* Don’t forget to take care of your skin even after pregnancy in the post partum period. You will lose weight dramatically during this period and your skin will be more susceptible to stretch marks.

If you still develop stretch marks, don’t stress yourself just yet. This will become unnoticeable over time. If you are still conscious about these unwanted marks, you could visit the dermatologist for a skin treatment.

Healthy Food Choices During Pregnancy

When a woman becomes pregnant, it is always imperative that she will take care of her health in a more careful manner than ever. Because pregnancy involves the phase wherein a baby is prepared for its entry into the world in her mother’s womb, it is important for the baby to obtain the proper amount and kind of nutrients that will ensure a healthy and safe delivery.

Eating Right during Pregnancy

There are various factors that a woman can do to ensure that her health and that of the baby is in good state. For some women, a little exercise will help while others have their own routine that are also beneficial for the baby and for the mother, along with providing a hope for a safe delivery. However, one thing that a pregnant woman should not ignore is to make the healthy choices of foods during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, the baby is totally dependent on its mother for nutrients. This is why a pregnant woman must bear in mind that what she eats is not only for her own health but for the baby as well. Here, a lot of misinterpretations exist. Some pregnant women insist that just because there are now two of them to feed, it means she has to double her regular food intake. This is entirely wrong. She does not necessarily have to double her food intake. She just need to make sure that the proper dose of the needed nutrients is more than enough. She also needs to make the healthy food choices.

Healthy Foods to Eat during Pregnancy

What are the healthy food choices for pregnant women? There may not be a single list of foods that will be good for all pregnant women. This is because each pregnant woman has her own unique needs. Nonetheless, it is possible to list down foods that will be right for all pregnant women regardless of their state:

Lean meat, fish, eggs, and peanut butter. These are rich in protein and they help regulate the protein concentration in a pregnant woman’s body. Inability to regulate protein content in the body, especially in the urine, may cause preeclampsia, which can have fatal consequences. Protein is also vital for cell growth and blood production. These foods are likewise good sources for iron, which is critical in blood cell production.

Bread, cereals, rice, potatoes, fruits, and vegetables. These are rich sources of carbohydrates, which are needed for the body’s energy. Moreover, carbohydrates also help in keeping the body warm.

Milk, cheese, yogurt, and sardines. These are rich in calcium, which is very vital in making sure that bones are strong as well as in maintaining nerve function.

Carrots, sweet potatoes, and leafy green vegetables. These are important for having a healthy skin, for bone growth, and for good eyesight.

Citrus fruit, tomatoes, and fortified fruit juices. These are great sources of vitamin C, which is needed to aid in iron absorption and for healthy gums, bones, and teeth.
